Title: Junior Production Designer
Description: Using InDesign (and occasionally legacy file formats), the Junior Production Designer makes corrections and minor additions or adjustments to reprints of Storey’s books; prepares print-ready files; and manages the archive of reprint files. This position is also responsible for coordinating file deliveries to other publishers who have purchased rights to our books, in-house staff that need to repurpose files, or other partners with approved access. An additional, key responsibility is managing photo deliveries, so hi-res files are properly named and organized, and lo-res copies are processed for use in design layouts.

Creating digital file formats of Storey’s titles using InDesign, Acrobat, xhtml, and css. The Junior Production Designer will convert frontlist and backlist titles into all digital formats. Under the guidance of the Digital Technician, will keep ebook conversions and practices up-to-date and in compliance with company guidelines and with accessibility standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Backlist Book Production

Reprints

Make corrections and updates to backlist books.
Prepare and deliver print-ready files.
Communicate closely with the production associate responsible for reprints and strictly follow established procedural protocols.

International, Premium, and Co-Editions

Coordinate and prepare files for delivery to international clients publishing foreign-language editions of Storey books.
Coordinate and prepare files for co-editions, premium, and custom sales.
Communicate closely with the colleague responsible for these sales to understand the client’s needs and timeline.

Archives

Locate and deliver files from archived books to in-house staff or publishing partners as needed.
Organize and maintain an archive of reprint corrections.

Photo Processing

Organize deliveries of high-resolution art from commissioned photographers, stock agencies, and other sources, strictly following established protocols.
Create and deliver timely low-resolution copies of photos for use in page layout.

eBook Production

Frontlist: taking a title from final InDesign pages through all stages of ebook development into all required digital formats, adhering to the guidelines and meeting accessibility standards.
Backlist: converting a title from final print files. Final files must meet guidelines and accessibility standards.
updating an older ebook conversion to epub 3.0 with current Storey styles and in compliance with Storey/HBG guidelines, retailer guidelines, and accessibility standards.
Fixed Layout ebooks: communicate, coordinate, prepare, and provide files to outside source for conversions
Search/Web PDFs: Create search and web pdfs from final print pdfs.
Pre-flighting and delivering files to print and ebook supply chains.

Other:

Coordinating files for print-on-demand books.
Organizing proofs for use as reference on press.
Taking the initiative to assume responsibility for additional duties as required.
Requirements: Skill Requirements:

At least 2 years of work experience in multi-page document layout, with an ability to prepare electronic files for press.
Working knowledge of Photoshop, Acrobat, and InDesign
Knowledge of XHTML, CSS, and editor tools such as TextMate, NOVA, or similar
Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel
Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
Ability to communicate, collaborate, and problem-solve effectively with a variety of people.
Ability to work under pressure in a constantly changing environment.
Ability to represent Storey professionally to external parties, including custom clients, printers, and other vendors.
Experience and judgment necessary to plan and accomplish complex goals.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
Strong attention to detail.
Positive attitude.
